35 YEARS OF METAL... DEAL WITH IT.
HISTORIOUS MYTHOS
For thirty four years, Briar Rose has blazed an uncompromising trail of traditional heavy metal in the face of trends, gimmicks and other distractions to remain true to the music they began playing back in 1988. With a brace of classic metal music in hand they have released their new masterwork, “Dark Lord” to enthusiastic and complimentary reviews from around the world. Twelve tracks of diverse ideas and themes yet retaining the true spirit of traditional metal, nothing false here at all. Bristling with dynamic fury both musically and lyrically, “Dark Lord” is a whirlwind of tales and experiences the band has encountered over the last few years and back even further than many shall know. Pillaging their own archives, Briar Rose has taken mere ideas of songs from their yesteryear and delivered them to life in the studios of legendary producer Chris “Dark Lord” Tsangarides (Thin Lizzy, Judas Priest, Anvil) who also provided guitar work to the tracks involved in a manner complimentary to the band’s way of thinking.
For founding member Randy Blake II (vocals), the album is the culmination of the dedication, ability and passion of his band-mates to create a pure Traditional Heavy Metal album the likes of which is seldom seen in these days of trendy corporate fodder. With Chris Landoch (bass), Joe McDonald (keyboards), Jeff Tundis (guitars), the collective of Briar Rose has brought you a promise and a statement that as long as they remain as one, Briar Rose’s metal will be true. |
THE BAND
RANDY BLAKE II
Birthplace: Fall River, Massachusetts
Height: Tall
Weight: Big
Former Bands: Tree, Hammond-Packard Bell, The Negative Attitudes, Mephisto Waltz, The Hellfire Club, Brideshead, Briar Rose
Musical Influences: Sorry, not enough bandwith to attempt to list them all here!!
Randy was born in 1963 in Fall River, Massachusetts. He is the last of ten children and the only one of his family to have spent time growing up in his mother’s homeland of England which gave him a very different reference to music altogether. He was able to see live practically every legendary heavy music act in their prime at a very young age. That would be the likes of, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Sweet, T.Rex, Thin Lizzy, UFO, Alice Cooper, Ted Nugent, Nazareth, Slade, Sex Pistols and literally THOUSANDS of others!!
His first band was in 1976 called Tree followed a year later by Hammond-Packard Bell. In 1979 he became the lead vocalist in The Negative Attitudes. It was 1982 when he co-founded the heavily NWOBHM influenced band Mephisto Waltz where he met future Briar Rose guitarist and co-founder Marc Lattinvile. After the demise of that band he worked with future Briar Rose keyboardist Joe McDonald in the formation of The Hellfire Club (U.S.)and worked with a variety of musical styles. 1987 saw the arrival of the band Brideshead combining elements of Prog, Metal and Celtic Folk. The end result was the duel concept album “Beggars And Businessmen”. Among the previous two bands were the founding members of what would become the original members of BRIAR ROSE in June of 1988
1988 saw the release of the EP “Briar Rose” and from that point on it was BRIAR ROSE full steam ahead for Randy. It has been his heart, soul and passion ever since and he will defend it with broadsword held high!! Although he has worked with many, many talented musicians over the years he feels that the current line-up of himself, Jay Vanderpool, Chris Landoch, Joe McDonald and Jeff Tundis is the definitive BRIAR ROSE.
He is often told that for the length of time he has kept BRIAR ROSE alive that he “is” BRIAR ROSE. A title he is uncomfortable with. All bands combined, he has recorded ten albums and many one-off singles over his 36 years in the music business. From roadie to Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Ramones, Plasmatics and Motorhead to promotion work for Capitol/EMI to contributor to Record Collector and Classic Rock magazines he has lived his beloved heavy music full on all of his life pausing briefly to care for his parents. He has also created a record collecting and new talent magazine called “VAULT” and in the fall of most years will take the stage at his Order’s Arthurian Celt Festival and perform songs from everything to ancient Celtic songs to Jethro Tull and Fairport Convention. He is an Arthurian Celt. He is also a Panelologist and writer of Children’s Stories… now isn’t THAT scarey!!

CHRIS LANDOCH
Birthday: July 15th 1987
Birthplace: Fall River, Massachusetts
Former Bands: Late Night Television, No Avail, a couple of other jam bands where the music was more important than the name, Briar Rose Musical Influences: Led Zeppelin, Rush, Chicago, Dire Straits, The Sword, Cream, Soundgarden, Classical Music, Vanilla Fudge, Liquid Tension Experiment, Alice in Chains, Tool, Cathedral, Cirith Ungol...just too name a few.
Chris’s earliest memories were that of listening to music of all sorts. Listening then spawned playing. Mom’s plastic kitchen containers, spatulas, and metal pots and pans made for excellent percussion but did not fly over too well and he drove his parents virtually insane. To quell the infant ‘Moby Dick’ of the kitchen he was given a violin at age 5 and begrudgingly started lessons. While every other kid was watching ‘Popeye the Sailor man’ or ‘Tom and Jerry’, Chris spent his Saturdays taking violin lessons. Child mutiny resulted and so did a time of musically doing nothing, until a new resurgence of violin lessons began. Not being able to read sheet music well or at all for that matter, it was just so much easier to memorize the music note for note and play it from memory as opposed to reading the notes on the page. Regardless of near perfect playing it drove his music teacher nuts and she eventually dropped him from her roster.
More time passed and then he picked up the bass at 13 and never looked back, this time to the sound of his own tune. Being practically self taught (lessons being a waste of time and money) Chris learned from experience as he went jamming with people in and out of school playing in a couple of nameless punk bands here and there in his early high school years. But the best was yet to come. In the early 2000's, recruited by a long time friend and fellow classmate, Chris joined a band that would be later called ‘Late Night Television’. A band that played covers mostly quickly turned into jam sessions that would last hours and whole afternoons. Due to personnel changes 'LNTV' turned into ‘No Avail’ another jam band that fused smooth jazz with heavy rock resulting in blown out amplifiers, smashed guitars, destroyed snare drums and things rattling off the walls. College then happened. People came and went on with their lives, some stayed in touch with old band mates. Chris never stopped jamming and when schedules allowed he’d get together with past band members to jam and record. After several more failed band formations due to egotism of others, long time acquaintance and BR drummer Jay Vanderpool approached Chris to try out for Briar Rose. Chris tried out at the next practice and the real insanity begun...
In addition to his bass playing duties for Briar Rose, Chris is also a graduate student pursuing a Masters Degree in Medieval History and Early Modern European History.
He still plays the violin, and the balalaika.
Chris uses Fender and Peavey Basses and Carvin Amplifiers

JOE MCDONALD
Birthday: December 12, 1959
Birthplace: Fall River, Massachusetts, USA
Resides: Swansea, Massachusetts, USA
Height: 5' 10"
Weight: 160 lbs.
Musical Influences: Too numerous to mention. Among them: Erroll Garner, Return To Forever, Fairport Convention, Marillion, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Gram Parsons, Thin Lizzy, Wishbone Ash, The Roots, Iron Maiden, Grand Funk Railroad, Frank Zappa. All genres and almost all styles.
Joe McDonald was born on December 12, 1959 in Fall River, Massachusetts. His parents, both teachers, exposed him to copious amounts of what is now considered classic television drama, along with the literary works of Nevil Shute, Edgar Rice Burroughs and Kenneth Robeson. From a musical standpoint, Joe's early musical influences were from his parent's record collection: jazz, big band, vocal standards and Broadway Cast albums. Although he had seen most of the legendary musical performers of the day on shows like ED SULLIVAN, AMERICAN BANDSTAND, SHINDIG and others, his own record collection didn't begin to take serious life until he heard JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR in its' entirety in the Spring of 1971. Shortly thereafter, he began reading ROLLING STONE, CIRCUS and CREEM and a whole new world of music opened up to him. Weekly trips to Alexrod's Music in Providence, Rhode Island also meant a hefty pile of piano sheet music making its' way into his piano bench.
In 1986, he met a fellow musician who started working with him. The musician's name was Randy Blake II. Randy had recently come out of studio from recording demos with his band MEPHISTO WALTZ. At that time, Joe offered his assistance on any future projects. Shortly thereafter, Mephisto Waltc broke up and Randy began working on another project which, with Joe's help, along with guitarist Marc Latinville, became known as THE HELLFIRE CLUB. Recording 15 tracks over two years, their mutual influences and styles began to develop a new project and a new band called BRIDESHEAD. Their efforts during 1987 and 1988 yielded the concept album BEGGARS AND BUSINESSMEN. But the strain of working a day job, constant rehearsals and the recording of the album had taken it's toll and Joe decided he could no longer give 100% to the band, even as he, Marc and Randy were about to embark on what would eventually become BRIAR ROSE. Following Brideshead's sold-out showcase concert in June of 1988, Joe opted out of the band.
Over the next 22 years, Joe McDonald continued to toil in a day job and put performance behind him. He concentrated on his painting and his writing, this time in the realm of fiction versus music. He became a freelance video producer, working on a number of projects for VIDEO EXCELLENCE and producing work for such notable music clients as CHUCK NEGRON of THREE DOG NIGHT, TAVARES,EMERSON DRIVE and RAINING JANE. He also settled down, marrying his wife Joan in 1991 and being the devoted father to two children: Kayleigh(born in 2000) and Hope(born in 2008). He created a comic book fanzine entitled THE PODIUM which he published monthly for five years. He also organized a fund raiser for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund which featured luminaries from the field including Dave (CEREBUS) Sim. Despite it all, Joe and Randy never completely lost touch with each other.
In 2008, Randy Blake II, with a reformed BRIAR ROSE, journeyed to Kent, Enlgand and recorded the album ROSES ARE RARE, VIOLENCE IS TRUE. In 2009, Randy and Joe spent many weeks designing the package for that album. After the record's release, Joe became a regular at rehearsals: taking pictures for the group, being an extra set of ears in the room-just being a friend to the band. In December of that year, the members of Briar Rose invited him to join the group that, as Randy put it, he "was supposed to be a part of all along." Joe has been active in the band ever since, co-writing tracks for the DARK LORD album and performing live. When the group went to Kent to record DARK LORD, Joe's duties on the home front required him to stay in the United States. Following the recording of their tracks, producer Chris Tsangaredies e-mailed the rough mixed tracks to Joe who, with a hefty production assist from Eric Anctil, recorded his tracks on the floor of his living room over a three day period before sending them back to the Chris.
Today, Joe still finds time to work with the band on new material, rehearse for upcoming shows, work a full-time job AND have time for his family, especially his daughters. With the oldest involved in scholastic sports(when not handling merch at Briar Rose shows) and his youngest being totally enthralled watching superhero cartoons with her dad, Joe finds his life full and fulfilled. But among it all, he truly enjoys the friends he has made both within and without of the band...especially those throughout the world.

JEFF TUNDIS
Birthday: March 15th
Birthplace: Rhode Island, USA
Former bands: Big Talk, Shatter, Resistance, Powerslave, Fat Voltzwagon, Jazz Bastards (current)
Musical Influences: Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, Phish, Rush, Testament, Tool, Van Halen, Yes, Zappa…. This could go on forever…
Jeff was born on March 15th 1972 in Cranston, Rhode Island in the United States. According to his mother, his first foray into music was playing drums at a Chicago concert from inside the womb when she was 5 months pregnant.
After years of playing air guitar in several imaginary bands, Jeff formed his first real band in High School. First playing guitar, then vocals and bass guitar and ultimately just bass guitar (an instrument that has remained his main instrument) this project became Big Talk, and a move to Los Angeles followed in an attempt to chase fame and fortune -- a journey that ultimately ended in failure.
Upon returning home, Jeff formed a power trio called Shatter, resuming vocal duties as well as bass guitar.
Next came Resistance, Jeff’s first Heavy Metal band for which he performed lead vocals exclusively. This lead to contact with former Iron Maiden vocalist Paul DiAnno and a near-contract deal with Metal Blade Records that ultimately fell apart.
Some of the members of Resistance also doubled as members of Powerslave, an Iron Maiden tribute band (with Jeff in the role of lead vocalist) that enjoyed some local success.
After a short hiatus, Jeff resumed bass guitar and vocal duties in the rock band Fat Voltzwagon. That project eventually lead to Jazz Bastards, a rock/jam band that has been together since 1999.
Wanting to challenge himself and expand his musical horizons, Jeff accepted an invitation from Briar Rose founder Randy Blake to join the band on guitar in 2012.
Jeff enjoys many different musical genres. Sometimes a happy little ditty is all that’s required to get you through the day, and sometimes what is required to drown out the din of daily life is the accumulated screams of the damned as they roil up from the bottomless pit of hell. At least that’s what Randy tells him. Metal saves lives, people.
Jeff has released two albums with Jazz Bastards: Of Questionable Origin and 50 Giant Steps. A third album is currently in the works.

The band's third album is an official live bootleg recording of the band performing at their late guitarist Jay Travers' memorial show. It was a cam-corder recording that was mixed into stereo. As rough as it is, it very much captures the MK I version of BRIAR ROSE in full force and in control despite the first track "Foreshadow" being fully out of tune!! It was also the first time "Eyes Of Wonder" and "Cry For Dawn". Both of these tracks would not appear in studio form until 2012 and 2009 respectively. An interesting gem in the band's history. Original copies of this album are extremely hard to find.

It was also the first time "Eyes Of Wonder" and "Cry For Dawn". Both of these tracks would not appear in studio form until 2012 and 2009 respectively. An interesting gem in the band's history. Original copies of this album are extremely hard to find.

The band's fifth album was once again produced by Grammy Award nominated Producer Chris Tsangarides. While containing many new songs that were written for the album, it also contains previously never recorded songs dating back as far as 1992. Critically well received all over the world, the album picked amazing airplay due in part by the single "Egowhore". Three more singles brought more attention to the album in the form of "The Illusion Dwellers", "The Portrait Of Carlotta" and an insane cover of the lost '60's classic "My Girlfriend Is A Witch" as well as the first studio version of "Eyes Of Wonder". The dark, unusual cover was designed for the band by graphic artist Valkyrie Lycan. A mighty album indeed!!
